Instructor Mary Kay Branch lived in Japan for 30 years and studied Ikebana as a lifetime pursuit. Mary Kay Branch lived in Japan for 32 years and taught music, speech and drama at Department of Defense schools, most of that time on an Air Force base near Tokyo. While in Japan, she spent nearly 30 years studying Japanese tea ceremony and flower arrangement (ikebana). She has teacher's certificates in both fields and began teaching ikebana after she and her husband moved to Camano Island in 2001. The study of ikebana leads one to an appreciation of the intrinsic value of individual flowers and students learn that it's not necessary to have a huge bouquet in order to create a beautiful and artistic arrangement. By following a few simple rules, students learn to make elegant arrangements using just a few flowers and branches. Also, Mary Kay hopes to instill a new awareness of the abundance of wonderful plant material that surrounds us on Camano Island, whether it be in your own yard or growing wild along the roadside.
